Miami is known for sun, sand, and crypto conferences. But this year’s Consensus 2026 event brought an unexpected complaint from attendees: the smell.
Several participants took to social media to express disgust at the lack of deodorant use among some attendees. Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Solana infrastructure firm Helius Labs, was blunt on X, asking “what is it with crypto mfers and not knowing what deodorant is.” His comment quickly went viral.
Social Media Complaints Pile Up
A crypto influencer known as Liv joined in. She was in Miami for events hosted by Solana, Pengu, and Tessera Lab. She wrote, “I swear some of the men don’t use deodorant and they have like a 5 feet radius around them.” Other users echoed the sentiment. One comment suggested that “girls often complain that the men at crypto conferences stink.”
The problem seemed so widespread that another influencer, Bangerz, praised one event for being odor-free. “You wouldn’t believe it but i went to a web3 event and everyone was wearing deodorant and it smelt like italian pasta,” Bangerz posted. That rare compliment was directed at a gathering hosted by Tessera Lab and Sophie Maxx.
Heat and History Play a Role
It’s not entirely surprising that some attendees struggled to stay fresh. Miami temperatures were already above 30 degrees Celsius during the conference. This isn’t the first time crypto events have faced odor complaints. At Token2049 in Dubai, temperatures reached over 40 degrees in 2025. Back then, some users sarcastically warned attendees “not to wear deodorant and just enjoy the nights out deodorant-free.”
But Mumtaz wasn’t amused then either. During Token2049, he posted tips for attendees, including “wear deodorant…” He also joked that offenders would be reported for possession of hard drugs, adding “its nothing personal.”
Possible Solutions Emerge
Some users suggested that crypto summits should offer gift packages with blockchain-themed mints and deodorant. Others joked that event bouncers should be “checking how you smell” instead of looking for weapons or contraband. Crypto influencer Gigi, who has complained about the issue before, tried to nip the problem in the bud with a simple plea: “please remember to wear deodorant.”
For now, the odor problem at crypto conferences remains a hot topic, both literally and figuratively. Attendees seem to agree that a little hygiene goes a long way toward making these events more pleasant for everyone.
