$2B Bitcoin Options Expiry: Limited Market Impact Expected

Around 25,000 Bitcoin options contracts expired on Friday with a notional value of roughly $2 billion. The event is relatively small compared to recent weeks, so analysts say it is unlikely to cause major shifts in spot markets. The put/call ratio for this batch stands at 0.55, meaning there are almost twice as many call options as puts. Max pain is set at $80,000, slightly below current spot prices, so some contracts could expire out of the money.

According to Deribit, open interest remains highest at the $80,000 strike price, with $1.68 billion in contracts. Bears still hold significant positions at $60,000, with $1.2 billion in open interest. Total Bitcoin options open interest across all exchanges has climbed steadily this month to $38 billion, as per Coinglass. A Deribit spokesperson noted that compared to last week, the expiry size has grown materially while put/call ratios moved lower, suggesting traders continue rotating toward upside exposure.

Ethereum Options Also Expiring

In addition to Bitcoin, around 274,500 Ethereum options contracts are expiring with a notional value of $625 million. The max pain is at $2,300, and the put/call ratio sits at 0.39. Total Ethereum options open interest across exchanges is around $7.3 billion. These contracts likely contribute to some short-term volatility but are not expected to alter the broader trend.

Spot Market Outlook

Total cryptocurrency market capitalization has risen 1.7% on the day to $2.77 trillion. Bitcoin recovered from its Thursday dip below $80,000 but struggled to break resistance at $82,000, falling back below $81,000 during Friday’s Asian trading session. Ether has seen little recovery, failing to break above $2,300 and slipping back to $2,265. Some altcoins like XRP, Hyperliquid, Zcash, and Canton have posted modest gains. The US CLARITY Act advanced out of the Senate Banking Committee in a 15-9 bipartisan vote on Thursday, which may contribute to market uncertainty. Overall, the past six weeks have seen steady gains with total capitalization increasing by 16%.
