Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 this week after stronger-than-expected US data and changing expectations around Federal Reserve rate policy added pressure to crypto markets. Altcoins fell harder. The selloff did not last long, though. In the last 24 hours, the market turned green again, and BTC moved back toward $82,000.
Correction, Not a Bear Trend
Analysts are split on what happens next, but many see the drop as a correction inside a larger uptrend rather than the start of a bear market. Crypto analyst Matthew Hyland made that case in a post on X. He argued that macro risk cycles are getting longer, and Bitcoin may be following a similar pattern.
Hyland thinks the usual four-year cycle may be stretching into an eight-year cycle. If that read is right, the current bull phase could run until 2028. That is a big call, and it depends on how you measure cycle timing. Still, Hyland points to past market behavior in 2016 and 2020 as rough comparisons. He also cited Bitcoin’s move from $69,000 to $125,000 as one signal of that trend, though the claim needs more context to judge on its own.
Cycle Timing and the $250,000 Target
According to Hyland, the cycle bottom came on July 1, which would be the 44th month of the cycle. If the cycle lasts about 96 months, he says the current uptrend could have another 52 months to run. Under that timeline, he expects Bitcoin to rise above $250,000 before a sharp and prolonged bear market begins.
That target is far from guaranteed. It assumes the longer-cycle idea holds and that broader market conditions do not break down first. Hyland also compares 2026 to 2028 with the third year of the old four-year model. In that window, he expects Ethereum to outperform Bitcoin, while altcoins could see sharp gains.
What Comes After the Peak
After Bitcoin reaches its top, Hyland warns that a multi-year bear market could follow. He points to past cycles and says a 70% to 80% drop, or worse, is possible. That is a severe outcome, but it fits the pattern he is describing. For now, traders are watching whether BTC can hold above $80,000 and whether the recent recovery has legs. This is not investment advice.
