Vote puts independence in play

Starknet, built to help scale Ethereum, is asking token holders whether it should become a standalone Layer 1. StarkWare opened a Snapshot poll that runs until Oct. 22. The early result is lopsided: 99.88% support. The vote is non-binding and only approves more research, so a technical move would need more votes and months of work. STRK would remain the network’s settlement asset and bridges to Ethereum would keep working.

Market reaction and derivatives

STRK rose 25% on the day voting began, according to the article. That follows a 200% rally earlier in October, then a pullback with the wider market. Trading has leaned toward derivatives. Daily futures volume hit $894.84 million, nearly eight times spot volume of $116.38 million. The activity comes alongside an unlock of 127 million tokens for early investors, which may add supply pressure. I think the market is reacting to the independence signal more than the token unlock, at least for now.

Quantum security argument

The stated reason is quantum security. Eli Ben-Sasson, head of the project, believes advances in AI have moved the threat from future speculation closer to present planning. Starknet says it could deploy quantum-resistant protections by 2027. Ethereum’s own security upgrade is slated for the end of 2029. Starknet argues it should not wait two extra years if it can control its own roadmap. That is a cold calculation, perhaps, but it is also a real strategic bet.

The security trade-off

Leaving Ethereum would cost Starknet something important. Today, its transactions rely in part on Ethereum’s security and the billions of dollars staked by validators. As an independent chain, Starknet would have to build its own protection system and lean on the value of STRK. The token’s market cap is about $580.24 million, far below Ethereum’s. Developers appear willing to accept that trade-off for a technological edge, but investors should watch how the security model is funded and tested. The preliminary vote is not a final divorce. It is a signal that Starknet wants to explore one.
