BitMEX, the crypto derivatives exchange known for pioneering perpetual swaps, has announced it will shut down operations on September 23, 2026. The decision comes after a strategic review by its parent company, HDR Global Trading Limited. The exchange will stop accepting new user registrations immediately.
What Led to the Decision?
According to the announcement, the closure follows a thorough evaluation of the business and the broader digital asset landscape. While BitMEX did not specify exact reasons, the move seems to reflect changing market conditions and regulatory pressures. The exchange has been operating for over 11 years, and its team expressed pride in its legacy, particularly for inventing the 100x leverage perpetual swap. They also noted that BitMEX never lost user funds to hacks, a claim few others can make.
Timeline and Restrictions
Trading will continue until the shutdown process advances, but starting August 26, 2026, traders will only be allowed to reduce existing positions. No new positions will be accepted after that date. The exchange will gradually force close outstanding positions ahead of the September 23 deadline. Any remaining positions at closure time will be automatically closed. Illiquid contracts may be settled early per existing procedures.
After the exchange closes, users can still access their accounts to view balances and transaction history, and withdraw remaining assets. However, BitMEX warned that customers who fail to withdraw before the deadline and have completed KYC verification will face ongoing custody charges. These fees start at $50 or 1% annually, billed monthly, and could increase in the future with notice.
Security and Phishing Warnings
The exchange also cautioned about phishing attacks exploiting the shutdown announcement. Enhanced withdrawal reviews and blockchain confirmation delays may temporarily slow withdrawals. BitMEX has unstaked all BMEX tokens held in staking, making them immediately available to holders.
The shutdown marks the end of an era for one of the earliest crypto derivatives platforms. Its legacy, however, will likely be remembered for innovation as well as regulatory troubles. Users are advised to act promptly to avoid unnecessary fees.
