AI-Generated Lottery Numbers Yield Surprising Win
Tammy Carvey from Wyandotte, Michigan just won $100,000 in the Powerball lottery, but what makes her story unusual isn’t the amount—it’s how she picked her numbers. The 45-year-old claimed she used ChatGPT to generate the winning combination for the September 6 drawing.
Carvey’s ticket matched four white balls and the Powerball, which normally would have earned her $50,000. But she had added the Power Play feature, which doubled her prize to $100,000. “I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played on my ticket,” Carvey explained.
The Moment of Discovery
The win came as a complete surprise to Carvey and her husband. She didn’t realize she had won until checking her Michigan Lottery account. “It wasn’t until I logged into my Michigan Lottery account that I realized I added the Power Play to my ticket and actually won $100,000!” she said. “My husband and I were in total disbelief.”
This isn’t the first time someone has claimed to use ChatGPT for lottery success. Back in September, Carrie Edwards from Virginia won $150,000 using a similar approach with OpenAI’s chatbot. It seems people are increasingly turning to AI for what used to be pure chance decisions.
The Irony of AI in Lotteries
There’s something interesting about using AI to predict lottery numbers when you consider how lotteries themselves are using artificial intelligence. Lottery organizations across the country are implementing AI systems for security, fraud detection, and player protection. The technology is changing how lotteries operate—just not how people win them.
The Michigan Lottery has emphasized that Powerball results remain completely random. No AI can actually predict the winning numbers with any real accuracy. But that doesn’t stop people from trying, and occasionally getting lucky.
Changing Approaches to Chance
Carvey’s experience shows how people are incorporating modern technology into age-old games of chance. Where people once might have used lucky numbers, birthdays, or random selections, some are now turning to AI assistants. It’s an interesting shift in behavior, even if the underlying odds remain the same.
While the lottery organization didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, the story has certainly captured attention. It raises questions about how people interact with AI in everyday decisions, even when the outcomes are fundamentally random. The win may have been pure luck, but the method of number selection reflects our changing relationship with technology.
